Get UGC From Your Customers

Here are 3 simple ways you can get UGC from your customers starting today.

Happy Wednesday!

Your UGC can come from many sources. This week, I want to share our best practices for collecting valuable feedback and content from customers.

You can implement all these today and create a database of hundreds of UGC photos and videos from your happy customers.

What we’re going to take a look at today:

  • Customer journey after they purchase your products

  • Why send your customers a personalized email from a founder

  • Copy & paste email template you can use immediately

  • How to collect UGC photos and videos from customers

  • How to incentivize customers to create content for you

  • What role does unboxing experience play

And much more…

I asked my production team to document all our systems and best practices for sourcing, training, and managing UGC creators.

Who doesn’t want to work with top UGC creators who are easy to work with and don’t ask you for thousands of dollars for 3-month usage rights?

I don’t want people to steal this resource and share it on Twitter and LinkedIn for retweets, so please keep this private.

Idea of the Week

Customer feedback is crucial. A database of hundreds of UGC assets from happy customers is priceless.

Deep Dive: Get UGC From Your Customers

Every interaction your customer has shopping with you creates an opportunity to motivate them to film authentic UGC for your brand.

Customer purchased from your brand? Awesome!

This is not the end but the beginning of the journey. A few days after your customers receive the products:

  1. Create an email or SMS flow to thank your customers for their purchase

  2. Invite them to share their experience with your brand and products

  3. Ask creative questions and communicate like you’re their friend

  4. Mention that you’re excited to hear their feedback and you read every email

Email & Questions Template

Bonus points if you sign this email as a founder with your name in handwritten font.

People are much more likely to communicate with a founder than respond to what looks like an email campaign from a brand.

Here is the email and questions we use for our brand in an after-purchase email flow:

I want to make sure our products arrived okay and ask what we can improve.

  1. How satisfied are you with the quality of our products?

  2. Was there anything that disappointed you about our products or that you would change?

  3. Do you have any specific ideas or recommendations on how we can improve our products?

  4. Would you recommend our products to your friends?

Please send me your feedback as a reply to this email. I personally read every email.

This email is signed by the founder. The response rate is extremely high.

Actual Feedback From Our Customer

Just today we received a wonderful reply to this email from our customer. At the end of her email, she mentioned:

“Thanks for caring about my feedback. Very few do.”

Messages like this from your customers are heartwarming.

How to Collect UGC Photos & Videos

Customer feedback is crucial when growing your brand. But you know what else is also important?

Having a database of hundreds of UGC photos and videos from your happy customers that you can use on your website or in your ads.

The challenge is only a few customers will volunteer to take photos with your product, look up your email, and send them to you.

Even fewer customers will film good-quality videos and send them to you.

Incentivize Your Customers

I recommend you set up an email flow asking your customers to:

  1. Take a photo with your product for $5 credit for their next purchase; or

  2. Film a customer testimonial video according to your guidelines for $20 credit for their next purchase

Not everyone will take a photo for $5 or film a video for $20. That’s fine.

You also don’t need everyone. Just your most excited customers who are comfortable being on camera.

Unboxing

Imagine receiving a package from your favorite brand. You’re not only excited about the product inside, but you also feel amazing opening it.

As a brand, think about how you can design your packaging to make customers want to share it on social media.

Think beyond the box:

  • Inserts that tell your brand story

  • Packaging that doubles as a backdrop for photos

  • QR codes that lead to an interactive experience

Motivate your customers to share their unboxing moments by making the process delightful and surprising.
